Best Stainless Steel Skillets - What is the Best Skillet For Your Kitchen?

What to consider when looking for the best stainless steel skillet to use in your kitchen? Many manufacturers offer different size skillets and some have a nonstick coating and others are not coated. Depending on the type of dish you are trying to prepare will determine whether you should use a nonstick or uncoated stainless steel cooking surface.

The traditional uncoated surfaces are great for preparing meals that you would start on the cook top and finish off in the oven. The best stainless steel skillet for this type of cooking process is one that has a handle that is capable of withstanding the oven temperatures also.

The other benefit of using this type of stainless steel cookware is that it produces what is called a fond. These are those brown sticky bits that you find clinging to the bottom of the pan that you can make a flavored sauce from by deglazing the pan at the end. This is something you don't get when using a nonstick pan.

Other things to consider when looking for the right stainless steel cookware for your kitchen are the size of the skillet and the weight. I think the preferred minimum size of a skillet should be at least 12 inches. It should be large enough that if you are preparing chicken or meat that the pieces fit in the pan without touching each other.

Having a good quality stainless steel cookware should be a least at medium weight like around 3 pounds or more. This type of cookware will distribute the heat evenly, easier to control the cooking process and will brown and sear meats beautifully. Lightweight cookware can heat up too quickly and can be more difficult to control the cooking process.

So if you prefer this style of cooking it will pay to have a good quality stainless steel cookware in your kitchen.

Waterless Cooking With Mert Stainless Steel Pots and Pans

Most of us learned to cook from our mothers, grandmothers, or maybe from a cookbook. The traditional way of cooking most foods is to put it in a stainless steel pot and pan with water and boil or simmer the food. But studies have shown, the best way to maintain the nutritional value of the food as well as the natural flavor is by waterless cooking in special stainless steel cookware which allows the food to be cooked in its own juices. So, what are the other advantages to waterless cooking?

Most cooks will look at the same issues when cooking:

Ease of cooking
Time to cook
Clean-up time
Amount of fat and oil in the food
Taste
Nutritional value

Waterless cooking is easy and can take less time than conventional cooking. Heat is evenly distributed, and with no burning or sticking, the pots and pans are much easier to clean. What's even better, oil is not needed to prevent sticking making your favorite dish lower in fat and calories. The food cooks in its natural juices, which enhances flavor and preserves nutritional value.

The principles of waterless cooking are relatively simple and straightforward. High grade stainless steel cookware protects the food. Aluminum cookware does heat faster but studies have shown that some Aluminum gets into the food, which may not be good for your health. Waterless cookware is made of high grade stainless steel, and does not allow tastes from the metal to leach into the food.

Stainless steel pots and pans are also easier to clean and does not require Teflon coating, which also may get into the food. Surgical stainless steel is the highest grade but that is more about marketing than cooking.

The bottom of the stainless steel cookware is machined flat. This ensures that as much surface as possible comes into contact with the coils of an electric stove or the grates of your gas stove. An aluminum or copper plate distributes the heat evenly along the bottom of the pots and pans which prevents hot spots that can burn the food and provides heat to the bottom in all directions.

The special lid forms a seal, locking in the natural moisture that steams from the food during the cooking process. This allows food to cook in its own natural juices, and allows flavor, vitamins and minerals to be retained. Much of the nutritional value of vegetables cooks out of boiled vegetables and is poured away with the cooking water. With waterless cooking, there is no need to add water since vegetables contain a large quantity of water. Water that is released from the vegetables upon cooking turns into steam and is contained by the lid and the vegetables actually steam in their own juice.

A whistle or steam valve notifies the cook when the natural juices create sufficient steam, and the cook can then turn off the heat, saving energy and preventing overcooking. The food cooks at a constant temperature due to the pots and pans heat retention capabilities and the heat of the steam inside the pot. Stainless steel cookware does not radiate much energy, and the iron core or plate maintains a constant temperature for continued cooking even with the heat turned off. That translates into energy savings and that is a huge advantage in today's slow economy. The food also cooks quicker, at lower temperatures, and in their own juice making it is tastier and better for you.

Where can you buy this Stainless Steel cookware for waterless cooking?

Most waterless stainless steel cookware is sold through "cooking parties" in people's homes. The price on the cookware pots and pans is expensive. You can also buy less-expensive, similar cookware in department stores, but the quality is not as high.

At a typical Cookware party a salesman (who gets a cut)usually demonstrates how to make a meal with their product, and the guests get to watch the process and try the food. The host or hostess usually gets a free pan as a reward for having the party(adding more cost to the product).

I have attended cooking parties in the past and have found the flavor of the food cooked with waterless cookware stainless steel is excellent-tender and flavorful without using oil. The added benefit was that the food went from raw to the table in about 10 minutes. The food did not stick to the stainless steel pots and pans so clean-up was a breeze. The broccoli was simply delicious and very flavorful. The potatoes were good, and the chicken was evenly done and tasty.

This really got me interested in waterless cooking. I love to cook and am alway interested in new ideas and recipes. Unfortunately, the waterless stainless steel cookware sold at cookware parties is extemely expensive. A set of pots and pans from this manufacturer ranged from $2000 to over $5000! Because of its construction, waterless cookware is a higher grade and costs more to manufacture. There are several websites that carry this type of cookware at very reasonable prices. They also have the same quality as the cookware sold at cookware parties.

Stainless Steel Cookware - Professional Chef Magazines

A set of stainless steel pots and pans will provide several pans of various sizes which will give you just what you need for any purpose or occasion. If you are struggling with unsightly, mismatched cookware, and having trouble finding a size that is appropriate for what you are trying to do, you might want to consider replacing them with a new set of cookware that will give you just what you need any time you need it.

A great selection for cookware is stainless steel. Other cookware materials such as copper or aluminum simply do not have the special properties that it does. It will not be damaged by foods, no matter what the ph balance is. It resists corrosion, scratches, and other damages. Properly cared for stainless steel is shiny and beautiful, adding a gourmet look to your kitchen.

Stainless steel cookware's quality can largely be determined by its ability to provide an excellent cooking experience. In order to achieve this, when selecting any stainless steel cookware, be sure to look for a disk of material which is heat-conducive, and is located on the bottom of the cookware. While stainless is an excellent choice for cookware; it needs to be combined with aluminium or copper. Of these choices, copper is a better conductor of heat.

Second, make sure to choose the right non-stick coating. A high quality non-stick coating produces eye-pleasing browned crusts on foods that easily release from the pan. A high quality non-stick coating will last a long time and be resistant to scratching and other damage if properly cared for.

Teflon can be a good choice for a non-stick coating since it is durable, inexpensive and easy to find. Used and maintained properly, Teflon is safe and will ensure that your foods can obtain flavorful browning without sticking. Another option for the best non-stick cookware is a coating called Silverstone. Silverstone is more durable than Teflon and can withstand more scratching with sharp implements, but it is pricier and harder to find.

A final tip when shopping for stainless steel cookware is to look not only at prices but also brands and reviews. Cooking and professional chef magazines have plenty of information about the various brands of stainless steel cookware.

Check Out Magefesa Mageplus Stainless Steel 6.5 Quart Super Fast Pressure Cooker for $166.09

Magefesa Mageplus Stainless Steel 6.5 Quart Super Fast Pressure Cooker Review

I don't know anyone who's ever used a pressure cooker but anything that'll make me hot, cooked food fast is right up my alley. I felt guilty running the slow cooker for 20 HOURS just to make pork roast so looked around and found pressure cookers, then did the research and found this Magefesa one of the best. And it's Spanish too so I'm happy. It cooks artichokes in 5 mins! How cool is that? I don't get home from work until 11pm and one night I actually made beef stew (which I wanted badly) in 20 mins. and it only took that long because I kept forgetting to add things and had to keep cooling it down and then restarting the heat thing; it was delicious, stew meat was tender even. I made barbecued ribs this past weekend in about 15 mins. which include running them under the broiler to brown (so they sort of looked like they'd been done on a barbecue which we don't have). And it's stainless, my favorite stuff to cook in. Construction is perfect, vents and valves work beautifully. So far, haven't burned anything so the pot cleans up real fast.

The instruction manual that came with it was in Spanish and I wish I had learned at least how to read Spanish but I never have. But I'm resourceful so went online to the Magefesa website and printout out the manual in English--doesn't have the recipes the Spanish one has in the back but at least I know what to do and what not to do with my cooker. The safety features work really well (scare the cats when they blast). I think this is the best invention since fire. The only improvement I can imagine is one of these that provided magic food so we wouldn't have to shop first, or clean and prepare the food; we'd just have to tell the pot what we felt like eating and it would magically produce it.

Magefesa Mageplus Stainless Steel 6.5 Quart Super Fast Pressure Cooker Feature

  • 3 cooking levels: traditional slow cooking: max 6 psi, fast cooking: max 9 psi, super fast cooking: max 15 psi. Silent and air tight.
  • Made of 18/10 surgical stainless steel.
  • 5 additional safety systems: safety pressure sensor, working valve, over pressure valve, safety edge lid window and "easy lock" system (prevents opening before pressure is released).
  • Encapsulated base: 18/10 stainless steel + aluminum + 18/10 stainless steel for even heat distribution.
  • Designed and made in Spain

Magefesa Mageplus Stainless Steel 6.5 Quart Super Fast Pressure Cooker Overview

Preserves vitamins and minerals that are usually lost with conventional cooking methods. Reduces cooking time up to 70% in nowdays busy life so you will be using less energy (ecofriendly) and saving money. Ergonomic handles.

best pressure cooker - Mitra - Cleveland, OH USA
This is my serious pressure cooker that I bought. We are vegetarians and it is important for us to cook beans nicely. Not to mention the time that we save by using a pressure cooker. I am happy with the purchase. I downloaded and printed the bruchure in English from their website. Just need to figure out the cleaning the lid and being patient with that in the beginning. Otherwise, it is doing its job very nicely and I think it is worth it to buy a nice pressure cooker that spending the same amount for having multiple ones that do not the job as nice.

No English instructions with package - N. Pomeroy -
I have no idea if the product works as described. I don't think I should operate it without the operating and safety information found in the user manual.

The user manual is in Spanish only. This is sort of a deal breaker for me; I'm not going to have my family learn a foreign language just to use a pot. I wish they would have put that in the item description.

Excellent Quality & Easy Operation - Rick Krenz - Between Houston and Galveston
Hello,

I have used the old Presto rattle top pressure cooker and the American (Wisconsin Aluminum) pressure cooker for years. Both are aluminum and use the rattle top device on top of the pressure cooker to control pressure. I have researched pressure cookers for a while now and decided on the Magefesa Mageplus pressure cooker, I have the 8 and 4 liter pots. According to Cook's Illustrated the Rikon Kuhn and Fagor are the best. The German WMF Is right up there and the Presto stainless does well too. But after checking on the Magefesa I learned that Cooks Illustrated test used the Magefesa XL or Practika pressure cooker for testing. It did well but not as good as this one would have. This one is their top of the line pressure cooker. The XL or Practika is in the middle and uses a different type of pressure control. This Mageplus pressure cooker uses a similar pressure control to the Kuhn Rikon and WMF cookers. After using these I can not imagine a pressure cooker being any easier and safer to use. The large pressure indicator (a button with lines) moves up and down with pressure. It is very easy to see and adjust burner temperature as needed to control pressure. If you walk away or forget, there are other safety devices to keep everything safe, 5 total.

From what I have seen, it is easy to clean, well made and should last a very long time, time will tell.

For those of you who are a little scared of pressure cookers. If you will pull up a chair and watch the first 2 or 3 times you use any pressure cooker you will see how they work with YOUR stove. You need to learn how the pressure cooker acts on your stove. Once that is done you will feel confident and try new things with your pressure cooker.

Good luck.

Check Out All-Clad Stainless 3-Quart Saute Pan with Loop for $159.00

All-Clad Stainless 3-Quart Saute Pan with Loop Review

I've been relying on two Le Creuset french ovens for almost everything but boiling water for years. But there were gaps to fill and that led me to research All-Clad. To spend this much money I wanted to be sure I was getting something practical and efficient, not an expensive regret that made for a great kitchen ornament. I brought this one home and it was love at first use...let me tell you why.

Although french ovens are wonderful (can't live without them) for searing meat, braising, cooking soup and casseroles, they are bulky and annoying if you don't need the space for liquid. I had spent a good deal of $$ a few years ago on Calphalon non-stick w/o realizing it has a short life span. Those pans did fine, but they are tired and worn...so as a big believer of buying for life I knew stainless steel was the best option. The copper is fantastic I'm sure, but I'm not on a copper budget.

Once I had narrowed the search to All-clad SS, I had to decide which pan to buy. The need I had was mainly to sear meat, fry and carmelize onions, etc. I narrowed it down to either the saute, fry or french pans. Honestly the reason I decided on this 3 qt saute pan is because I found a good price, but now I am sooo glad this is the one I chose. I really find the loop for extra stability invaluable.

And sticking is not even a concern. I can't believe I even worried about it. It cooks like a dream, properly warm the pan and add some oil and you are good. I think the problem so many make is they don't realize the importance of temperature. You will burn food and things will stick and you will damage cookware if you do not know what temperature to turn your burners to. I know, because ten years ago I made the same mistakes.

As I searched reviews, message boards and blogs for other's most versatile or favorite pieces of cookware I got frustrated because I never really found those answers, so for what it's worth as a mom cooking for four 2-3 times a day here's my can't live withouts if you are on a budget and don't have $$ to waste on splurges:
-----

Le Creuset Cast Iron Enameled French Oven (oval fits a large bird and is great for casserole, soups, cassoulet, short ribs, etc. you can even bake bread in it). I have the smallest size and a larger one and often have both working at mealtime.
-----
Large stockpot (stainless steel)
---
8" non-stick omelet pan for cooking eggs & pancakes
---
3 qt All-Clad Stainless Steel sauce pan (great for cooking pasta, sauce, soup)

All-Clad Stainless 3-Quart Saute Pan with Loop Feature

  • Classic 3-quart, 10-1/2-inch, straight-sided, 2-1/2-inch-deep sauté pan
  • Three-ply: stainless-steel layers sandwich pure aluminum core for even heating
  • Comfortable lid and stay-cool pan handles riveted for strength
  • Dishwasher safe, but hand washing recommended
  • Lifetime warranty against defects

All-Clad Stainless 3-Quart Saute Pan with Loop Overview

Here's a useful piece of kitchen equipment constructed of stainless steel and aluminum for strength, even heating, and good looks. Feeling like coq au vin for dinner? No problem when you have this pan on board.

All-Clad Stainless 3-Quart Saute Pan with Loop Specifications

The bestseller among All-Clad's renowned cookware collections, the Stainless line provides serious and professional cooks all the virtues that make All-Clad's worldwide reputation unsurpassed. Key to its high performance is a three-ply, bonded construction. Sandwiched between layers of stainless steel is a thick core of pure aluminum that spreads heat evenly across the bottoms of pots and pans and all the way up the sides. The interior is highly polished 18/10 stainless steel, so it's stick-resistant as well as stain- and corrosion-resistant. The exterior is made of gleaming, magnetic stainless steel that works on induction as well as conventional stovetops, and, with care, remains beautiful during this cookware's lifetime warranty against defects--and beyond.

This classic, straight-sided, 3-quart sauté pan makes clear why All-Clad Stainless is so popular. It's 10-1/2 inches in diameter and 2-1/2 inches deep, perfect for sautéing veal scallops with chanterelles or garlic-scented greens. Its polished 18/10 stainless-steel pan and lid handles are riveted for strength and grooved on the top for comfort. Like the pan's loop handle, the long handle (holed for hanging on a hook or peg) stays cool on the stovetop but won't be harmed by an oven's heat. Although Stainless cookware is dishwasher-safe, hand washing is recommended. --Fred Brack

From the Manufacturer
All-Clad Stainless Construction
Each piece of All-Clad cookware features a unique metal bonding construction. All-Clad Stainless cookware sandwiches a thick core of three separate layers of aluminum between an easy-to-clean, highly polished 18/10 stainless-steel cooking surface and a magnetic stainless-steel exterior. The aluminum core retains heat and evenly distributes it along the bottom and up the sidewalls of the cookware. The stainless interior is stick-resistant and cleans easily. The magnetic stainless-steel exterior gives the cookware a gleaming finish. All-Clad Stainless also features the company's signature "stay-cool" long handles, lids fashioned from gleaming 18/10 stainless steel, and highly durable stainless-steel rivets. All-Clad Stainless cookware is one of five collections from All-Clad Metalcrafters. Designed to work on conventional gas and electric ranges, as well as induction cooktops, All-Clad Stainless cookware is the best-selling collection in a full line that includes All-Clad LTD, Cop-R-Chef, Master Chef 2, and Copper Core.

Features and Benefits
All-Clad pans with a stainless interior cooking surface are oven-safe up to 500 degrees. All-Clad pans with a non-stick cooking surface are oven-safe up to 400 degrees, but should not be used under the broiler. We recommend using a low to medium temperature when cooking with All-Clad. Higher heats are not necessary and may cause discoloration (see cleaning instructions below). Other features include:

  • Beautifully polished, magnetic stainless exterior layer.
  • Pure aluminum core that not only covers the bottom of the pan but also extends up the sides. This allows for great heat conductivity as well as an even heat distribution so you won't have "hot spots" when cooking.
  • Stainless-steel interior layer/cooking surface.
  • Long, polished stainless, stay-cool handles.
  • Sturdy, non-corrosive stainless-steel rivets won't react with foods.
  • Polished stainless-steel lids fit evenly with the pan's edges to seal in flavor of your foods.
  • The All-Clad Stainless collection is compatible with an induction stovetop (with the exception of a few pieces) in addition to gas and electric stovetops.
  • The Stainless collection is dishwasher-safe, excluding pieces with a nonstick cooking surface.

Warranty
From date of purchase, All-Clad guarantees to repair or replace any item found defective in material, construction or workmanship under normal use and following care instructions. This excludes damage from misuse or abuse. Minor imperfections and slight color variations are normal.

Cleaning Instructions
For daily cleaning, warm soapy water is sufficient. Clean your All-Clad thoroughly after each use. Food films left of the pan may cause discoloration and sticking. To get rid of stuck-on food or discoloration and stains from using too high of a heat, we recommend cleaning your All-Clad with a product called Bar Keeper's Friend. To use the Bar Keeper's Friend, simply use a soft cloth or sponge and water and make into a soupy paste. This can be used on the interior, as well as the exterior of your All-Clad (excluding the Cop-R-Chef). The Bar Keeper's Friend can also be used on the exterior of the All-Clad Stainless collection, LTD collection, and MC2 collection. For cleaning of the Cop-R-Chef exterior, simply use a brass/copper cleaner. If your water has a high iron content, you may notice a rusty discoloration. Use Bar Keeper's Friend to remove it.

Not Impressed, Really - Nicholas T. Dedring - Brooklyn, NY
For the price, and for the amount of ink that has been spilled over all-clad pans over the years, I expected amazing things from this pan.

The heat is reasonably evenly distributed, but even with all the effort in the world, I've not been able to keep this pan from building a surprising body of stains and unmovable scorched spots of food that didn't want to leave the pan when done.

I wouldn't say that I'm getting rid of this pan, and I continue to use it, but I have had much better luck for a great deal less money from my Cuisinart Multiclad Pro cookware.

4-quart is perfect blend of surface area and higher edges - Nicholas A. Sanchez - Northern California
This saute pan is A+! The surface area is generous and I really like the higher edges to help prevent too much of a mess when mixing from within the pan. The weight is just right and the quality for the price is right on!

Great product - Alton Gray - Norfolk, VA
Previously I had a Calphalon saute pan in this size and used it for a number of years although it warped shortly after I purchased it. The All-Clad pan is noticeably heavier than the Calphalon product and I've had no problem with warping yet. I'm careful not to run cold water into a hot pan as that can cause it to warp and to cook at a reasonable temperature. Also the lighter color of the stainless steel (as opposed to the dark anodized Calphalon product) makes it easier to insure that it's been properly deglazed, capturing all the nice browned bits into the completed dish. I recently replaced my Calphalon skillet with an All-Clad one for similar reasons. I'm sold on the All-Clad product.
