Furnace Buying Tips

Choosing a furnace for your home is not difficult. The following list are features that you may want to look for when buying your furnace.

1. What type of furnace do you want? Will it be Gas or Electric?

The Gas Furnace

The gas furnace is always more affordable to use than the electric furnace where gas is readily available. On the downside, burning fuel generates fumes. In well-maintained gas furnaces, the fumes generated are enclosed in the exchanger and then exit the house through an exhaust vent.

Remember, a gas furnace must be checked by a qualified professional at least once a year. The professional would check the furnace for holes, leaks or cracks. A break or crack in the furnace lets carbon monoxide seep into your house or place of business.

The Electric Furnace

The electric furnace has a higher cost than a gas furnace. On the upside, since electric furnaces do not use flames, it does not generate any carbon monoxide. The electric furnace is cleaner and safer than a gas furnace.

2. The Quality of the Furnace

The quality of the furnace determines how long and how well it will perform. Choosing a brand of furnace that has a history of quality and reliability can be less costly in the long run. Ask your contractor about which brand will be optimal for your needs. A free estimate for the purchase and installation are available in some companies.

3. The Efficiency of the Furnace

The efficiency of gas furnaces are determined by the AFUE or Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency ratings. The AFUE ratings identifies how efficiently is the fuel being consumed. In most cases, a higher AFUE rating means it takes less fuel to heat your home.

Gas furnaces with higher ratings cost more than those with lower ratings but may save you more money down the road. A minimum rating of 78% is established by the government in 1992. Many furnaces have an efficiency rating of about 60% prior to 1992.

a. The Mid-Efficiency Furnaces

The mid-efficiency furnaces are also called 'induces draft furnaces' or 'non-condensing furnaces'. The mid-efficiency furnace offers the bare minimum of 78% efficiency up to about 80%.

b. The High-Efficiency Furnaces

The high-efficiency furnaces are also known as 'condensing furnaces' or 'sealed combustion furnaces'. The high-efficiency furnaces has an AFUE rating as high as 96%. Some furnaces use a two-stage valve and an efficient variable-speed motor to raise comfort and effectiveness.

4. The Comfort features of furnaces

Several furnaces provide features that increases comfort and efficiency.

a. The features of the two-speed furnace

The furnace can function at low speed for most of the time. It allows for a more quieter operation for a longer amount of time compared to a 'single-speed furnace'. The longer run periods allow for fewer start/stop cycles, less drafts, and very little temperature variance.

The temperature swing is limited to about two degrees compared to the four degree variance of the single-speed units. The two-speed unit gives better circulation which prevents warmer air from rising and the cooler air from settling down. The two-speed unit gives a more consistent temperature in the house.

b. The features of variable-capacity furnaces

Furnaces with variable capacity provide a combination of efficiency and comfort. The variable-capacity has a motor that regulates your needs by automatically adjusting air volume and speed. The var-cap furnace provides the most efficient heating and cooling.

A fan comes with the var-cap furnace. The fan will reduce your cost during summer. If the fan is used throughout summer, the central air conditioning unit increases in efficiency.

5. The furnace noise level

Unfortunately, all furnaces do not come with a standard rating system for sound unlike heat pumps and air conditioners. Although, two-speed units and var-cap units generally operate at a low noise levels.

The two-speed and var-cap furnaces run for longer periods and lower sounds than the standard unit. Certain var-cap units has features that prevent 'creaking' of the ducts due to expansion and contraction caused by changing temperature. The temperature differential is reduced so that the creaking noise is also almost eliminated.

How to Cook Great Smoked Barbecue Brisket

A perfectly done smoked barbeque brisket is one of life's little pleasures. If done right it is tender, moist, brimming with beef flavor and tinged with just the right amount of smoke.

The meat will have a identifiable pink colored ring just below the surface of the meat. That ring is called the "smoke" ring. It enhances the flavor of the beef in a very unique way that makes smoked barbecue brisket a special treat. It can't be achieved any other way but to cook under the influence of slow burning, untreated hickory, oak, pecan, or fruit tree wood.

This article provides the basic steps for cooking outstanding brisket and the steps are simple enough for the novice to follow.

Brisket is regional specialty of barbeque, originating in Texas and currently found in most barbeque establishments. It's the great counterpoint to pork barbecue.

Brisket is a tough but flavorful cut of beef. Don't worry about it being tough because your barbecue "low and slow" cooking method will render it very tender.

Let's get started on the cooking steps:

The first thing you want to do is to clean and pat the meat dry.

Trim any large fat deposits from top portion of the cut. Some people like to leave the fat streak on because it moistens the meat while its cooking. The fat actually does a good job of preventing it from completely drying out. The fat really helps the flavor. Remember that you are using a smoker, which means you are generally placing your brisket on a rack or grid. Put a drip pan under the meat to catch the drippings. The drippings can be used to make a sauce for serving the barbecue.

After trimming you need to season. There are lots of spice combinations that go well with barbecue brisket. The best include onion powder, garlic powder, black pepper, smoked paprika, salt, sugar, dry thyme, dry mustard and cayenne.

A simple brisket rub is 1/4 cup salt, 1/4 cup garlic salt, 1/4 cup black pepper, and 1/4 cup smoked paprika. Sprinkle the rub liberally over the surface of the meat.

The brisket now needs to marinate under refrigeration for at least 2 hours but preferably overnight.

Once the meat is marinated then you are ready for the smoker.

Use charcoal briquettes or hardwood charcoal for heat. Your smoker temperature should be in the range of 230 to 250 degrees. Add two or three chunks of your choice of wood (that has been soaking in water for at least an hour) for smoke.

Your brisket will cook for approximately 6-8 hours. You will be able to pinpoint when done by monitoring the internal temperature of the meat.

Using a "instant read" meat thermometer periodically check the internal temperature of the meat. When the meat reaches approximately 140 degrees wrap the brisket in foil and place back on the smoker. At 140 degrees the meat will not absorb any more smoke. This should take about 2-3 hours.

When the meat reaches an internal temperature of about 190 to 195 degrees the meat is done. Take the meat off of the smoker and let it "rest" about 20 minutes before serving. Enjoy your smoked barbecue brisket!

Using and Maintaining a Gas Grill

First, you must bear in mind that maintenance of gas grills is very easy. After using it, start by cleaning its body, then with the burners. First Off I'd like to say that this pan is awesome, very heavyweight cast iron which gives even heat distrubution, even over a small burner. I like the sloped sides very much compared to a standard cast iron pan, allows for you to easily flip things, and you can spread bacon out all the way.

I rated this product 4 stars because I feel that the handles are rather thin which may effect durability. Mine are holding up fine but they seem thinner than the traditional lodge cast iron pan handles.

One reviewer stated that the pan is difficult to hold. I don't think its the shape of the handle that causes this, I think its the shear weight, this is a very heavy pan.

This is a very nice skillet esp if you like to saute and need room for a spatula. Lodge shaped this one nicely for using like a chef skillet. I gave it 4 stars because the factory seasoning was not perfect so I re-seasoned...no big problem. I will definitely buy more Pro-Logic.

I got this skillet to use for sauteing amounts of food that are too large for the regular sized Lodge saute pan (chef's skillet). It works great for that, and as a traditional skillet.

I bought at least 4 non-stick saute pan, even I use silicon spatula, but less than one year, they all had broken surface. Finally, I found this one, and it works just perfect, non-stick,(you have to put more oil to prevent sticking), I can use all kind of spatula,cooks evenly. Little bit heavy for me to move around and clean it.this size is just good for small family, 2 to 3 persons.

How Long to Cook Salmon

Cooking salmon is as easy or as complicated as you wish it to be. You can base it bourbon or dip it in a Thai-ginger soy sauce, you can grill or bake it (though some adamant grillers would argue that grilling is the only option, because of how it preserves the flavor), but the question remains, how long to cook salmon?

When grilling salmon, for every one inch of thickness you should cook it for 10 minutes. This can depend however on your grill and can range from 6-8 minutes per side. A filet normally is more or less 1 inch. Turn the salmon one time while grilling. Salmon continues to cook, even after being taken off the grill, so remove it just as it is opaque throughout. Because salmon keeps cooking after you take it out of the oven or off the grill, a general tip for cooking salmon is to undercook it a little. To ensure the salmon is done, cut into the thickest part of the filet and check the color.

Baking salmon is also an option, especially in the winter months, when grilling outside is less than ideal. A rule of thumb for cooking salmon is to bake for 10 minutes per inch of thickness @ 375 degrees. This would work for both filets and steaks. However, depending on if you like your salmon moist or drier, and depending on what a recipe calls for, how long to cook salmon in the oven can vary between 25-45 minutes.

To bake in the oven, place a normal size filet in a baking pan with some olive oil, and an accent flavor like salt or basic spice mix, soy sauce and ginger, or lemon juice and white wine, or maybe honey and mustard. Then place the salmon in the oven at cook until it turns a light pink color throughout.

If you do not like salmon skin, don't spray the baking pan and the skin will likely stick to it when you remove the fish.

Could You Improve Your Insurance Sales Watching a Guy Selling Cookware at a County Fair?

Even though there are big differences between selling products and selling a service when someone does a superior job of selling there are lessons to be learned. When you watch a top producer selling anything there are tremendous lessons to be learned from the obvious to the subtle nuances.

At the end of each summer there's a local county fair that's one of the better ones in the nation. This year my husband and I went, and while there my husband purchased a collection of cookware for me that was so obscenely expensive that many people have purchased cars for less. So, how did this guy selling cookware sell my husband on such an expensive totally impulsive and unnecessary sale? It wasn't like I didn't already have cookware, it wasn't like we left for the fair that morning thinking we needed to find cookware, and it certainly wasn't like either of us even knew cookware could cost that much money. Read and learn.

It had been a long morning at the fair when I noticed this guy had some kind of cooking demonstration going on that involved chairs for the audience, so we happened to sit down in his audience. One thing you noticed immediately beyond the fact that the guy was just likable was that he wasn't just demonstrating his cookware he was actually teaching people about cooking, nutrition, and healthy eating. And he was doing it in a way that had the audience spell bound. This guy had a group of about 50 people completely focused on him and what he was saying. Why? All ears and eyes were trained on him because he was providing added value beyond what they expected.

He disqualified non-buyers from the start, but he did so in a way that wasn't insulting. He told the audience often, and with no shame that his cookware was very expensive. All throughout his demonstration he was preparing the future buyers and the non-buyers alike.

He focused on what he knew the people in his audience wanted. His focus was on fast, easy, and healthy cooking made simple in both preparation and cleanup. He had one of the future buyers sold within about 10 minutes of the start of his sales demonstration. In fact, this guy was so enthusiastic I thought he was a plant until I verified for myself that he wasn't.

He focused on the real decision maker. Few women would spend that kind of money on cookware without involving the husband, and this guy focused on selling the cookware to the husband and left it to the husband to close the wife. Nearly everyone in his audience was forty plus, and it's at that point that most people start to have a reality check about their health. My husband is extremely health conscious, and evidently so were a lot of other people in the audience. Now of the fifty or so people in the audience about a dozen were kids. Many were couples, so there were probably about a dozen real decisions makers at most. Yet at the end of his demonstration the cookware guy had sold three very expensive cookware collections. Perhaps you can take a lesson from the cookware guy to improve your career sales training, and it may not hurt to use the free sales skill analysis below to do a spot check to see how your skills measure up.

I am frequently asked about the best type of cookware to use with these powerful burners and, while its true that pans constructed to take the heat will work best, the key to getting good results with your cooking is to heat the pans slowly over low to moderate heat. Most people think they need a non-stick pan to cook eggs but I like to cook them in a stainless steel pan that I heat slowly for a few minutes, then add the butter before turning up the heat and quickly cooking the eggs and look at how nice and clean my pan is. Nonstick Cookware Sets - Tips on How to Protect Them From Being Damaged

However if you don't take proper care of your nonstick cookware they basically could become useless to you in a very short time. Always use the right utensils when cooking with nonstick cookware. Heatproof utensils like nylon spatulas, wooden, or silicone coated utensils are perfect for nonstick surfaces and will not harm them.

When washing your nonstick pots and pans never use anything abrasive just use a soft sponge. If you stack your nonstick cookware when storing them you should place a paper towel between each pot or pan. This will help to prevent the surfaces from getting scratched.

Cast Iron Cookware- The Cookware Our Ancestors Used

Cast iron cookware has been around for more than a hundred years and was once the favored type of cookware. In fact, many iron cookware pieces have been passed down from generation to generation - providing not only a necessary cooking utensil, but also a way to pass on memories and family traditions.

When searching for this type of cookware, yard sales, antique auctions and flea markets are always a good place to start. If brand new cookware is desired, many retailers still offer cast iron in many different varieties - from skillets to Dutch ovens to grill pans and more.

Why Use Cast Iron Cookware?

Many professional chefs choose cast iron cookware over other types. The reasons for this include the ability of the iron to retain heat as well as distribute the heat evenly throughout the cooking surface. In addition, the cookware is extremely durable and can endure extremes in heat.

Once seasoned properly, the cookware becomes non-stick and is especially good for cooking such items as eggs, grilled sandwiches and steaks or burgers.

Seasoning

Seasoning is essential with cast iron cookware. When purchasing the cookware new from a retailer, please follow the directions that come with it. Many of the new iron cookware is specially coated with substances in order to keep food from sticking.

With used or handed down cookware, the following instructions should keep the iron seasoned.

1. If the cookware is rusted, scour out the rust with steel wool.

2. Using vegetable oil, bacon fat, lard or other hardened fat, coat the cookware thoroughly and evenly.

3. Put cookware in oven upside down (do not forget to put some tin foil down to catch drippings and keep oven clean) and bake for anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours at a medium-high temperature.

4. Remove from oven and let cool completely.

5. Wipe out remaining fat or oil

6. Repeat seasoning steps as necessary

7. Store without lid on

Using Cookware

For cooking with cast iron cookware, it is recommended that the pan be preheated before adding food. To know when the pan is ready for cooking, add a few drops of water and make sure the water sizzles. Once it sizzles, it is time to add the food.

Cleaning the cookware is easy, but must be done by hand. Do not place the cast iron cookware in a dishwasher. Using dish soap and water scrub out the cookware and dry immediately. If seasoning is starting to wear off, add a very light layer of oil or fat to the pan before storing. Moisture leads to rust, so always store with the lid off.

Immediately after cooking, remove food from the cookware. The cast iron in the cookware is not good for storage of leftovers and may actually seep iron into the food, especially if cooking tomato-based sauces or acidic type foods.

Conclusion

Cast iron is a tremendously good type of product to cook with. Not only have our ancestors used this type of cookware almost exclusively, it has many enduring qualities to provide even heat and durability.

For the small amount of work put into the care and upkeep of the cast iron, it can provide years of service as well as many happy memories for generations to come.

Sigh... What wonderful pots. They conduct heat fantastically, look smashing, and are just a joy to use.

Cleaning-
Initially, after cooking a few meals I became quite distraught at the staining and phantom residue that the pans were retaining. Scrubbing with a scouring pad didn't work and soaking proved fruitless. Inside of two weeks the pots looked "used."

I'm on a crusade against Teflon (as much as one can be lol) and love the look and the durability of stainless steel cookware. However, for some inexplicable reason, most stainless steel cookware has handles that are also stainless steel, so the handles heat up along with the pan. Seeing how this is a huge inconvenience for anyone who actually wants to use stainless steel pans, when I saw this set, with silicone rubber around the handles, I knew I needed them. (Also, I'd been using my grandmother's Farberware pots and the handles started becoming loose, and they DON'T make Farberware like they used to lol.) 9 is a lot, granted, but you get a lot in this set, and the glass covers and the cookware is of extremely high quality. The pots and pants heat up quick and evenly, and they're heavy, extremely durable, and dishwasher safe. Calphalon for the win.

Basic Cookware Explained

What is All-Clad stainless steel cookware and why is it the best top-of-the-line bake ware you can buy? All-Clad cookware is made with a heavy aluminum inside which extends up the sides of the pan. It is coated with a stainless steel cooking surface and has an outside layer of magnetic stainless steel. This type of bake ware is ideal for cooking on a gas stove where the flames can burn up the sides of the pots and pans. These types of pots and pans are heavier than the less expensive kinds that you find at cheap discount stores. This cookware is extremely popular among the expert chefs, holds up well in high heat up to 500 degrees Fahrenheit and it comes in a nonstick version as well.

Maybe you like to do lots of browning. If so you may want to use uncoated or non coated cookware for your favorite recipes. A top brand of uncoated pots and pans are made by Wolfgang Puck. Chances are you will never see a review that will not give Wolfgang Puck high marks for its baking performance and price value. Uncoated bakeware has an aluminum plate as the foundation or base. It does not run up the side as does the All-Clad type which is a big reason why uncoated is less expensive.

Calphalon nonstick bakeware is a hard anodized aluminum bake ware with a nonstick coating. If you are looking for a cheaper brand that will perform almost as well as the more expensive ones this may be what you are searching for. Plus it is also lighter in weight than most All-Clad varieties or brands. It may require a little more energy on your part during cleanup though since most Calphalon nonstick pots and pans are not dishwasher safe. Another positive aspect to this type of cookware is that it can be used in your oven in temperatures up to about 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

Similar to Calphalon, Emeril (Emerilware) is a high quality cookware that compares favorably to other top-of-the-line pots and pans and is a very good value for the money. Your favorite recipe will still taste delicious. Famous TV chef Emeril Lagasse has this line made by All-Clad which is similar to their hard anodized cookware. The major difference is the designs added to the pieces. This cookware is made of hard anodized aluminum with nonstick cooking surfaces. It is not recommended for the dishwasher, but comes with a lifetime warranty. That is something you do not see everyday.

The debate about nonstick or uncoated has endured for many years, but which is actually better? Experts have always said that uncoated cookware gives better results, but nonstick has its advantages too. Fried eggs and pancakes are a couple of obvious examples of foods that are more fun to cook or bake on a nonstick surface. No more sticking to the pan during cooking or cleanup. Scraping cooked eggs off the pan is not one of the most enjoyable cooking activities. High quality nonstick skillets will contain a fully coated aluminum plate bonded with stainless steel allowing for even heat distribution. You can also find top brands that are dishwasher safe, although most manufacturers will recommend hand washing.

Starting with high quality cookware is a must if you are looking for the most enjoyable cooking experience. And before you can purchase the most ideal bakeware for your needs you have to ask yourself a few questions. How much can I afford? Will it bother me if they are not dishwasher safe? Do I want nonstick or uncoated? Would I prefer better cookware or easier cleanup? After answering these questions you will have a much better idea as to the type of cookware best suited for your personality.

Pickled Pig's Feet

Animals are here for us to use as food. When we butcher an animal, we try to utilize as much of that animal as possible for our food. The meat is processed in different ways, the hides are tanned for gloves, moccasins or clothing. What we do not use for our food becomes fare for the wild creatures that willingly clean up what is left. Nothing goes to waste. We even turn the feet of the pig into a delicacy that is offered in many establishments that serve beverages.

The first thing to do when making pickled pig's feet is to thoroughly clean the feet. To do that, scald them several times, then scrape them clean. I use a wire brush for cleaning. Make sure they are absolutely squeaky clean..Place them in a crock and sprinkle with canning salt. Let the feet stand for at least 8-hours. After that time, rinse them well with clean water.

Next, place the feet in a heavy pot and cover with water. Bring it to a boil and cook until the feet are tender, but not until the meat falls off the bones. In the meantime prepare the jars to put the feet in. They must be clean and free of chips. Be certain they are mason jars as they will go into a pressure cooker.

Next measure 2-quarts vinegar, 1-2 small red peppers, 2-tablespoons freshly grated horseradish, 1-bay leaf, 1-teaspoon each of whole black peppercorns and whole allspice. Bring this mixture to a boil. Pack the pig's feet into jars. Pour the boiling spiced vinegar over the feet leaving 1/2-inch head space at the top of the jar. Place caps and screw bands on the jars tightly. Place the jars in the pressure cooker and process for 30-minutes at 10-pounds of pressure.

Do not remove the jars from the cooker until the pressure has returned to normal. I store these in my pantry if all the jars sealed. Refrigerate after opening. Once the men get a taste of these the jar will be empty in no time.
